Biographical / Historical
Vikalp Women's Group, taking its name from Vikalp, the Hindi and Gujarati word for ‘alternative’, works for the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities between different genders, classes, castes, and regions. Vikalp seeks the recognition of women as equal productive and reproductive individuals, and lobbies to increase women’s accessibility to choices, social justice, health, education, and livelihood.
Founded in 1996 to combat domestic violence and discrimination against women in Gujarat, Vikalp evolved at the intersection of class, caste, religion, gender identity and sexual orientation, intervening in the everyday lives of marginalized women and LBT people. The organization aims to carry these struggles/articulations forward to influence policies and build stronger campaigns for just laws. Working in a collective manner, Vikalp negotiates inequalities and celebrates diversities.
